Ulster hooker Rob Herring has been brought into the Irish rugby squad ahead of Saturday's World Cup quarter-final against New Zealand.

He'll replace Leinster's Sean Cronin - who picked up a neck injury in training this week.

72-times capped Cronin had featured in two of Ireland's pool matches, coming off the bench against Japan and Russia but has now been ruled out of the rest of the tournament.

Herring has won eight caps for Ireland and was part of Joe Schmidt's training squad ahead of the tournament.

His province Ulster have wished the 29-year-old well in Japan.

Rory Best will captain the side against the All-Blacks with Niall Scannell now vying with Herring for a place on the bench.

Joe Schmidt has an otherwise full-strength squad and Rob Kearney is expected to get the nod over Jordan Larmour at full-back, Peter O'Mahony will return to the back-row at the expense of Tadhg Beirne while Robbie Henshaw and Garry Ringrose will resume their partnership in midfield after Bundee Aki's suspension.
