"Plenty to work on" | Pivac eyes improvement after big win over Italy

Wales still have a lot to work on after opening their Six Nations account with a 42-0 victory over Italy, according to head coach Wayne Pivac.

The bonus-point win seemed like the perfect start to life under Pivac but the New Zealander was eager to focus on what could be improved, albeit after a "pretty good performance."

"We got the five points we were after," the former Scarlets boss said at his post-match press conference.  "Pleased to have done that."

“Pleased to have held them scoreless. That doesn’t happen often at this level.

“The boys were working very hard. The boys want to play a bit more and at times we achieved that but at times we might have overplayed a bit.

“I think we were caught out quite a lot in the first half. A couple of quick throw-ins. It’s just about making sure we’re awake.

“The scrum was a bit messy at times. There is plenty to work on which is pleasing.”

Pivac added that he was "very pleased" for Josh Adams after his hat-trick of tries, highlighting his work rate for his final try, "after 80 minutes, he's in close to the ruck looking for the ball."

Asked about the influence of his defensive coach Byron Hayward, Pivac noted that the side had to get better at their decision-making.

“He’s working hard like all the coaches, working with the boys individually and collectively.

“We’re working on decision-making, we didn’t always make the best of decisions today.

“But I’m very pleased for Byron.”

In terms of injuries for Wales' trip to the Aviva Stadium next weekend, Pivac revealed that both Elliot Dee and Owen Watkin "should be right" while Liam Williams "will be touch and go" to be fit for contention.

Kick-off at the Aviva Stadium next Saturday is at 2:15pm.
