Will Addison should start at fullback for Ireland ahead of Jordan Larmour in the upcoming Six Nations clash with Scotland, according to Tommy Bowe.
The former Ireland and Ulster winger was on Tuesday’s OTB AM and he made the case for Addison to start at fullback.
“I think Rob [Kearney] had a good World Cup. He scored a couple of tries and played well but it looks like he’s one man who Andy Farrell doesn’t see a future in.
“Even Leo Cullen - he hasn’t played a whole pile of rugby for Leinster in the last couple of weeks. They’ve kind of put their back in behind Jordan Larmour. Hugo Keenan is another player playing very well.
“But Jordan Larmour - it’s exciting to see him. He had a good World Cup whenever he came on off the bench. He really lit things up. He seems to be adding a lot to his game and he probably will be the future full-back going forward for Ireland.
“But personally, I think Will Addison is the man who might pip him for the first game - if he stays fit,” Bowe said.
However, the former Sale Sharks has had plenty of injury problems in the past and Bowe admitted that it could hurt his chances of a start in Ireland’s starting 15.
“The problem with him is he’s one game in, one game out almost. He picks up an awful lot of injuries.
“But his ability to bring other players into the game, his ability to step up as first receiver - which is something that Ireland lacked going into the last World Cup, that attack.
“Taking the pressure off Johnny Sexton and just his all-round game. Jerry Flannery did a feature with us looking at his defence, looking at his high ball, looking at his attack.
“His attack gets a lot of the attention but his all-round game is something that will definitely add to Ireland,” Bowe said.
Ireland take on Scotland on February 1st in the Aviva Stadium to kick off the start of Andy Farrell’s reign as head coach.
