Munster have confirmed that an Academy player at the province has tested positive for COVID-19.

The unnamed player had been part of the wider training squad, but has been isolating since Monday.

They have not been at Munster's High Performance Centre at all this week, as the province prepares for an 'A' game with Connacht at Thomond Park on Saturday.

One senior player and three other academy players have been identified as potential close contacts, and are also self-isolating.

The HSE has been contacted and the the contact tracing process has commenced.

Munster's players and staff were tested for coronavirus on Tuesday as part of the IRFU’s routine PCR testing. Those tests produced zero positive results.

Munster Rugby Head of Medical, Dr. Jamie Kearns, said, "The health and safety of our players and staff continues to be our priority as we take every precaution to ensure a safe training and playing environment.

"The individual is being monitored medically and remains well."

It's the second case of COVID-19 to be reported by a Munster Academy player.

In August, training was suspended after a positive case was confirmed. One senior player and five academy players were deemed close contacts to that case and were required to isolate.

Munster say they await further guidance from the HSE.

The province are due to begin their new Guinness PRO14 season away to the Scarlets on Saturday October 3.

They'll also be guinea pigs for the PRO14's new Monday night matches, when they entertain Cardiff Blues on October 26.
