Munster have been dealt a massive blow ahead of their must-win Heineken Champions Cup pool game away to Racing 92 at the weekend with Joey Carbery out injured.

The province have confirmed that the 24-year-old sustained a wrist ligament injury in their loss to Ulster on Friday night.

The out-half now requires surgery and has been ruled out for the immediate future.

New Irish head coach Andy Farrell will also be sweating on his fitness as Ireland's opening Six Nations game against Scotland on February 1st approaches.

Carbery missed the warm-up period and opening three games of Ireland's World Cup campaign last year due to an ankle injury.

It still hasn't been confirmed that fellow number 10 Johnny Sexton will be 100 percent for that opening game in Dublin in Andy Farrell's first campaign.

The Leinster number 10 hasn't played since picking up a knee injury against the Northampton Saints at the start of December.

Leinster have said they will step up his recovery in the coming days though.
