Keith Wood | 'Munster should slow down head coach hunt'

Keith Wood spoke to OTB AM this morning and discussed Munster’s search for a new head coach.

Munster need a coaching ticket that is going to improve all the kids coming through the system," said Wood.

I would take my foot off the pedal for that, and it could well be Graham Rowntree to be that guy. But because of the manner that Van Graan had agreed to a contract and then took the 6-month clause to get out of it, we are floundering for a new coach while it’s a dreadful time to get a new coach."

So, I would say just slow it down because this has to be the absolutely right appointment whatever that is.”

Wood also discussed the role of academy coach Ian Costello, who took charge of the first team in their win over wasps in December

I talked to Ian Costello, he’s taken over the academy and he’s got a decent plan in place for the pathway, that’s what needs to be invested in because that’s the future."

We can talk about all the issues of the past and all the different things, but if you’re looking at Munster rugby you want to tidy it up with a structure. It doesn’t mean you’ll win now, but it something you can stand for and something you can stand behind," said Wood.

I have to say since Ian Costello has come back from Wasps there’s been an idea that he should be in for the coaching ticket. I would say resist that with everything you’ve got, because he has the opportunity build maybe the next two generations.”

The former Ireland captain also commented on Munster's plan to continue with the South African in charge.

The thing with Johann is that I don’t like the style of rugby, it wins a lot of matches, but I don’t know that it necessarily wins the big matches.”

Johann Van Graan is set to leave Munster for Bath this summer.
