'Jonny Wilkinson was the Roy Keane of Rugby'

Jonny Wilkinson was the "Roy Keane of Rugby" according to Trevor Hogan on Off The Ball tonight.

Trevor and Grenoble coach Bernard Jackman were on Monday Night Rugby to chat about the weekend's rugby.

But we started off by getting their take on the news that England's 2003 Rugby World Cup hero will retire from the game.

Drawing comparisons to Roy Keane, Hogan felt that Wilkinson's work ethic and high standards benefited rugby.

"It was like he was the Roy Keane for rugby. The demands he strived for became the standard bearer for out-halves. He probably might have been one of the sparks that got the whole idea of doing extras after training," said Trevor.

Bernard picked him as the best No 10 of all time ahead of the likes of Dan Carter.

The lads also discussed the Rabo Pro 12 semi-finals which saw Leinster beat Ulster 13 - 9 and Munster narrowly losing in Glasgow.

"This is the fifth or sixth time that Ulster have fallen short [against Leinster] But I do think that if they had Nick Williams and John Afoa...it was the scrum that cost them in the end because they were missing their two first-choice props," said Bernard.

The try hero for Leinster proved to be Ian Madigan but Bernard believes the versatile back has regressed.

"I think there would be a general consensus that he's gone backwards from where he was last year. Last year the competition was even stiffer [with Sexton] but Madigan was able to get a lot of game-time in various positions across the field and was one of Leinster's better backs. This year, for various reasons, he hasn't got that run of games or game-time at 12 or 15 either," said Bernard.

Trevor and Bernard also chatted about Joe Schmidt's selections for the Tour of Argentina and assessed the Rob Penney era at Munster as it comes to an end.
