Joe Schmidt 'recovering well' after having his appendix removed following Irish win against Australia

It has been confirmed this morning that the Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt underwent surgery yesterday after Ireland beat Australia in the third and final November international at the Aviva Stadium yesterday.

The IRFU says Schmidt had his appendix removed last night and is recovering well today.

The organisation adds that Schmidt "would like to thank the doctors and nurses of St Vincent's Hospital and everyone for their well wishes and kind messages of support."

The Kiwi had been unable to attend a post-match press conference after being rushed to hospital with appendicitis.

Schmidt was behind the 26-23 clean sweep against Australia - a win which made it three wins from three in the November Internationals.

Early tries from Simon Zebo and Tommy Bowe and seven points from Jonathan Sexton had put the Irish side in control.

But Nick Phipps responded with a try for the Wallabies and a second came via the TMO.

Jonathan Sexton's 63rd minute penalty proved to be the crucial score as Ireland held on for the win.

The 26-23 win rounds off a hugely successful few weeks for Ireland. Connacht centre Robbie Henshaw says the wins are the result of a lot of hard work:
