Joe Schmidt on Andy Farrell | "He'll go about things in his own fashion"

Joe Schmidt was exclusively on OTB AM this morning talking about the end of his time in charge of Ireland and his relationship with Andy Farrell.

Schmidt was complimentary about the succession plan the IRFU put in place where his former assistant Farrell took over at the help in his first job as a head coach.

The pair have been in contact since the Kiwi left the Irish setup, but Schmidt reckons Farrell doesn't need to ask for advice.

"We worked together for so long," said Schmidt, "he doesn't need any guidance from me, he knows exactly what he's doing and he'll go about things in his own fashion.

"I know it'll be a very well thought out fashion and he'll have done his homework and he's got a good crew working with him.

"We talked about Wigan rugby league, we talked about the NRL starting up and we talked about the situation in Australia.

"We talked about the quality of the people we work with as opposed to people who might be more difficult to work with.

"Even, we know each others' families pretty well and (we spoke) just about what might happen. I know the IRFU have plan A, B, and C, and I think they have handled the whole situation very well.

"For people to say things aren't sustainable, lots of things aren't sustainable, that's why there's a COVID-19 payment for people who aren't working.

"This is unprecedented really, it's the calamity that blindsides you and the IRFU have done a really good job and the players have been very receptive to that.

"So a lot of the conversation was almost peripheral to rugby."

Joe Schmidt was speaking to OTB AM as part of the 'Greatest Aviva Moments' series.
