Ireland going in the right direction according to attack coach Catt

Attack coach Mike Catt says Ireland are going in the right direction, despite a poor recent try-scoring record.

They’ve only crossed the whitewash twice during this season’s Six Nations, and face Italy in Rome on Saturday afternoon.

But Catt reckons Ireland will be purring once they become more clinical with the chances they're creating.

"I think where we currently are, we firmly believe the way we're going is the right way," he told Monday's media conference.

"We probably could've scored two or three extra tries against Wales with fourteen men with the opportunities that we created. Against France as well.

"So it's making sure at this level that the players understand that you have to nail what you create.

"We've obviously been pretty disappointed, in terms of the finishing, but ultimately the players have got to get this right for this weekend.

No new injuries were reported after several of the squad returned from Guinness PRO14 duty on Sunday evening.

And to the delight of the coaching staff, the group remains free of coronavirus.

Since their 15-13 win over Ireland at the Aviva a fortnight ago, France have reported fourteen COVID-19 cases split between the playing and coaching staff.

It's placed their meeting with Scotland under real threat.

But Catt says coronavirus is something that's yet to trouble the Ireland camp, "We all got tested three times last week. We've had a test this morning, so again we are COVID-free as we currently stand.

"We're very happy with the way things have been going, the players have been exceptional in sticking to their protocols.

"So that's all we currently can do, and at the moment we are doing pretty well on that."
