How tough is the switch from a rugby career to GAA?

Yesterday the news broke that recently released Connacht full-back Gavin Duffy is swapping rugby for a career in intercounty GAA.

While he prepares to come to the aid of Mayo, he is not the first rugby player to make the transition from one code to the next.

Former Leinster, Ulster and Ireland No 8 Eric Miller is one of that select community of players to have gone from rugby to Gaelic football.

Miller made the move in 2006 after calling time on his rugby career and played a senior game for Dublin GAA.

Tonight, he joined us on the show to talk about the challenge of switching sports.

"Sometime in 2006, Jason Sherlock got in contact with me and said that once I retire, [ex-Dublin manager] Paul Caffrey was interested in having me try out," said Miller, who jumped at the idea.

Miller felt the commitment levels were the biggest challenge during his brief Gaelic football career which saw him play with Ballyboden at club level.

In terms of the on-pitch acclimatization, Miller had played Gaelic in his youth and explained that the fundamentals skills of the game were not an issue for him.

"Just the awareness and running off the ball and knowing when to run, over time I found that difficult to get back. I struggled with that a bit," he added.
