Was Alan Shearer properly appreciated? There’s a danger that pundits become just their current living breathing iteration instead of retaining a version of their peak in the mind’s eye. Shearer was the greatest goalscorer of his era and his record stands comparison with any era.
Of course a few years at Manchester United, at any stage in his career, is the great lost moment in United’s history and the biggest blind spot of Ferguson’s career. We can only imagine the damage Shearer would have done playing with Giggs, Scholes and Keane.
This weekend we'll be talking about:
The Six Nations, The Super Bowl and the return of the league. The Six Nations holds so much possibility for an Ireland team playing with such confidence and apparently festooned with strength in depth. Our additional style will result in lots of injuries and it’s how we cope with those that will dictate whether we still have a chance of a Championship on St Patrick’s Weekend.

The Super Bowl kicks off late. The NFL are intent on globalising the sport but kicking off an hour earlier would be great for us Europeans. No matter, it’s worth staying up for. There’s a lot of talk about a Patriots blow out from informed sources but that’d be a remarkable outcome given how well the Falcons are playing. Get your wings and beers ready and stuff your face. It’s the last football for 7 months.
