EPCR confirm a nine-week format for Heineken Champions Cup

Next season's Heineken Champions Cup will be played over nine weekends, starting in December.

The competition will have a similar structure to the 2020/21 edition, with each team guaranteed four pool matches. Two rounds will be played on back-to-back weekends in December, and then again in January.

24 clubs will take part - eight from each of the Guinness PRO14 (now United Rugby Championship), Gallagher Premiership in England, and the French Top 14.

The round of 16 will have a two-legged format, and will be played on the weekends of April 9 and 16.

Having been deprived of the final for two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Stade Velodrome in Marseille will hope to make it third time lucky on May 28.

The Velodrome will also stage the Challenge Cup final on May 27.

Discussions regarding the integration of the United Rugby Championship's four South African additions for 2022/23 will continue.

As we put the finishing touches to a brand new shareholder agreement which promises to be positive for everyone involved in our tournaments, we are continuing to refine and develop the Heineken Champions Cup and Challenge Cup, and next season will see a return to a full series of massively exciting and competitive matches across Europe,” said EPCR Chief Executive, Vincent Gaillard.
