England's RFU are working on plans for a "festival of rugby" this autumn, involving teams from the Six Nations and possibly Japan and South Africa.
Upcoming fixtures in November are in doubt because of the coronavirus pandemic but English rugby's governing body are looking into proposals for an eight-team competition, including a final at Twickenham.
RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney believes it could be a positive way for the sport to resume.
"You take the Six Nations and you add in some guest teams," he told Sky Sports News.
"You could actually have some good fun with various different teams that you could incorporate in that and you create a real festival of rugby, a celebration of the values of rugby and returning to play rugby in autumn of this year.
"We are just going through all the various different scenarios and what we think makes most sense."
Earlier this week Sweeney had also revealed that the unions within the Six Nations are pondering the possibility of next season's Guinness Six Nations being played on a home and away basis:
"You'd play a Six Nations tournament in that autumn that would combine with fixtures next year and for the first time ever you'd have home and away. It's possible. Every plan has pros and cons to it and those are being evaluated."
