Andrew Porter ruled out of Lions tour | reports

Andrew Porter will not be part of this year's Lions tour of South Africa.

The Telegraph and The Irish Independent reported this morning that the Leinster and Ireland tighthead prop has been forced out through injury.

Porter picked up what appeared to be a foot problem in Friday's Rainbow Cup loss to Glasgow Warriors.

It was confirmed today that the toe injury is enough for the 25-year-old to withdraw from the squad.

He has been replaced in the squad by Bristol and England's Kyle Sinckler.

Sinckler previously toured in 2017 and was a shock omission from the initial selection.

He spoke of his disappointment after the squad announcement last month.

“It’s really bad luck for Andrew and we send him our very best wishes for a quick and successful rehab,” head coach Warren Gatland said.

“Andrew is a young man with a big future ahead of him and I’m sure he’ll be in contention again in four years time.

“As always in rugby, when there’s an injury there’s an opportunity for someone else. I have been very pleased to see the way Kyle has responded to initially being left out of the touring party.

“He’s showed some excellent form of late and I hope he continues to stick two fingers up to me about leaving him out in the first place.”

The Lions are scheduled to gather for the first time next Sunday, and play Japan at the end of June at Murrayfield.

They begin their tour of South Africa at the start of July.
