Rory McIlroy wins Canadian Open with a final round 61 ahead of Pebble Beach

Rory McIlroy is back to his best, capping off a great weekend for Irish golf by winning the Canadian Open by 7 shots.

McIlroy had a chance of a 59 in Ontario, but made a bogey at the last rather than the birdie which was required.

The County Down star finished on 22 under par with his nine under par 61, well clear of fellow Irishman Shane Lowry and Webb Simpson.

Graeme McDowell finished in the top ten to qualify for next month's Open Championship at his home course of Royal Portrush.

Focus now turns to this week's US Open Championship at Pebble Beach in California.

Rory McIlroy will feel huge confidence that he can end a five year wait for a major title.

His win in Canada was all the more impressive as it followed a missed cut at the Memorial Tournament.

His result this week was his 10th top 10 on the US PGA Tour this season, a stretch which has also included victory at The Players Championship, but a disappointing performance at the Masters.

His story is one of so many we can look forward to this week.

Lowry almost won the US Open at Oakmont in 2016, and will enjoy the links style conditions of Pebble Beach.  The rough is thick there right now, so being confident and in form is important.

Masters champion Tiger Woods returns to the course where he won the US Open by 15 shots in 2000.

American Brooks Koepka will bid to become only the second player in history to win a hat-trick of US Open crowns.

Phil Mickelson won at Pebble Beach this year and is to attempt to complete the career Grand Slam in an event he has finished second on six occasions.

Add a resurgent Jordan Spieth to the mix and a player in Patrick Cantlay that could be anything and it's some field.

It promises to be a block buster.
