Reports: Antoine Griezmann set for sensational swap with Saul Niguez

Antoine Griezmann could be set for a shock return to Atletico Madrid, just two years after leaving for Barcelona.

Cadena COPE in Spain are reporting that a swap deal involving Atletico's Saul Niguez is close to being completed.

26-year old Saul still has five-years left on his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, while Griezmann has three years remaining at Barça.

Griezmann joined Barcelona from Atletico in the summer of 2019 after a protracted transfer saga. He cost the Catalan giants €120million at the time.

Despite 35 goals in 99 appearances, the French forward's time at the Camp Nou hasn't been regarded as the success that was expected.

Griezmann is currently on holiday in Ibiza following his involvement at Euro 2020, and it's reported he's sharing his pre-season break with Atletico midfielder Koke.

Barcelona need to drastically slash their wage bill this summer, and swapping Griezmann for Saul would allow them to remove €12million from their books at a stroke.

Both players and both clubs are believed to be in favour of the move.

Barcelona are still looking to agree a new contract with Lionel Messi, who is currently without a deal.

Their need to balance the books has seen them trying to offload the likes of Samuel Umtiti, Philippe Coutinho, Jean-Claire Todibo and Miralem Pjanjic.
