Reports: Adam Griggs to leave Ireland head coach position

Adam Griggs is to leave his position as Ireland women's head coach next month.

The Irish Independent have reported that Griggs will depart after next month's autumn internationals with the United States (November 12) and Japan (November 20).

The task of hopefully leading Ireland to a Rugby World Cup return in 2025 will fall to Greg McWilliams.

He was part of the coaching team that helped Ireland secure the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2013, working as attack/backs coach. It's a position he held for nearly five years.

Since then, McWilliams has taken up an assistant coach role with the United States, and a consultancy position at World Rugby.

It's believed Griggs told the squad he was leaving on Wednesday.

He'd come under renewed pressure after Ireland missed out on qualifying for the World Cup in New Zealand. Defeats in the European qualifier to Spain and Scotland left Griggs on the brink.

News of Griggs' impending departure came on the same day the IRFU launched a wide-ranging examination of the state of the women's game in Ireland.

Ex-Wales international Amanda Bennett will also helm an independent review into Ireland's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

That review is expected to take between eight and nine weeks. An IRFU statement said of Bennett's panel, "The overarching aim will be to learn from any issues that led to Ireland failing to qualify and to identify areas of improvement that will support future international campaigns."
