If Liverpool might have felt cautiously optimistic of keeping pace with Manchester City, tonight's results might act as a serious reality check.
The Reds went down 1-0 at Anfield to Brighton and Hove Albion to lose a second successive Premier League home game, having been beaten by Burnley last time out.
Caoimhin Kelleher was in goal f Liverpool as they looked to return to home form, but Steven Alzate struck home for the Seagulls to give them a vital three points in their battle to avoid relegation.
Defeat for Liverpool, meanwhile, means that their chances of retaining the Premier League title are looking evermore remote.
Social media was, naturally, a hotbed of neutral thought and sober reflection.

Fabulous win and performance from @OfficialBHAFC. That’s 5 games played in the Premier League tonight with 5 away wins. Home advantage doesn’t exist without fans.

Graham Potter an excellent manager. Brighton's brave decision in looking to evolve their style gradually paying off.

#LFC 0 Brighton 1: After going 68 home league games unbeaten, the PL champions have suffered back-to-back defeats at Anfield. Got exactly what they deserved for a dismal performance. No urgency, no creativity, so flat. Big setback at the start of a massive month. Grim.
