You're only as good as your last game and for David Moyes, his recent experience at Sunderland isn't the only thing that has led to question marks.
While the Premier League's bottom placed side were already on the slide long before Moyes arrived, he has been unable to engineer too many good performances from what has admittedly been a poor squad.
But the chastening experience of briefly managing Manchester United as Alex Ferguson's immediate successor is the one that truly damaged his reputation.
Lest we forget, Moyes was highly regarded for establishing Everton as an upper midtable club during the vast majority of his reign between 2002 and 2013.
And he had previously done well at Preston North End.
However, while good reputations can be hard to build, they are easily forgotten in the bad times as Moyes found at Man United, Real Sociedad and now at Sunderland.
But what were his qualities at Everton?
Former Everton, Fulham and Anderlecht striker Tomasz Radzinski joined us on Newstalk's Team 33 to discuss his playing and post-playing career and he outlined some of the pros and cons of working with Moyes when he would have been regarded as near his peak.

Radzinski arrived at Everton when Walter Smith was still in charge but worked with Moyes from 2002 until he left for Fulham two years later.
"I think he did have lots of great features and he did make players better players," he said.
"What I did not like about David Moyes and his approach is the hands-on approach on every single player, trying to know and control every single thing that you are doing. That was a little bit difficult, a bit too much for me.
"But when it comes to just being on the pitch and trying to explain your tactics and how you should perform on the pitch and where your position is at any given moment, well these are the things David Moyes had it spot on every single time."
Since his achievement in guiding Wales to the Euro 2016 semi finals, Chris Coleman's star has been rising as a manager.
But back in 2004, he was less heralded as a young manager at Fulham. But Radzinski is forever grateful that he had the opportunity to work with him, even though on a personal level the Canadian did not enjoy playing wide on the left in a 4-3-3 during his Fulham days.
When I asked him what his favourite memories of Fulham were, Radzinski's response was quick and clear: "Meeting and being able to be managed by Chris Coleman for three years. I think he's a very special character. He was young, he was ambitious. He was everything that I loved about a manager, it was him."
Radzinksi also touched on how Alex Ferguson recommended him to ex-Everton manager Walter Smith after he scored two goals against Manchester United to give Anderlecht a 2-1 win in the Champions League group stage.
