PSG chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi elected as new ECA chairman

Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi will end the week as European football's white night having been elected ECA chairman.

The 47-year old has replaced Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli as head of the powerful European Club Association.

Agnelli quit at the weekend after his role in the doomed Super League project was revealed.

PSG had remained by-standers to the zeppelin-like flight of the Super League, with Al-Khelaifi ultimately saying on Monday, "We believe that any proposal without the support of UEFA - an organisation that has been working to progress the interests of European football for nearly 70 years - does not resolve the issues currently facing the football community, but is instead driven by self-interest."

With the backing of his Qatar Sports Investments organisation, Al-Khelaifi has been able to fund the record breaking arrivals to Paris of Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.

Now, he has been appointed as one of the most powerful voices in world football.

"I am honoured and humbled to have been appointed by my fellow ECA Executive Board Members as Chairman," Al-Khelaifi said.

"The leadership, integrity and togetherness of our organisation has never been more required than at this pivotal moment in European football.

"I will provide my unconditional commitment to the entire football community: that means to all ECA Member Clubs from every European nation, and to the fans and communities they represent.

"I, alongside all my fellow ECA Board Members and Clubs, am looking to reinforce ECA in its role as the legitimate and singular voice of Europe’s clubs.

"Our game, adored by generations of supporters, will only prosper under unity, and it is our duty as the custodians of football to fulfil this obligation."

Meanwhile, Michael Gerlinger (Director Legal Affairs, Human Resources and Institutional Relations at Bayern Munich) has been elected vice-chairman of the ECA.

Al-Khelaifi and Gerlinger will work alongside existing ECA Vice Chairmen Edwin van der Sar (Ajax), Dariusz Mioduski (Legia Warszawa) and Aki Riihilahti (HJK Helsinki).

“Time is running out for her to actually remember me…and time is running out for me”
