The Premier League have confirmed that Bernardo Silva's recent Manchester City goal versus Aston Villa will not be repeated.
In a tight game, Silva gave City a 79th minute lead aided by interference by midfielder Rodri who was returning from an offside position.
Rodri dispossessed Tyrone Mings after the Villa defender had chested the ball, before setting up Silva to put City in front.
Pep Guardiola's side went on to win the game 2-0.
Villa manager Dean Smith was given a touchline ban and fined £8,000 for his criticism of the officials arising from the incident.
A PGMOL statement attempted to justify the situation afterwards, saying, "A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
Essentially they said Mings' chest down enacted a new phase of play.
But the Premier League say discussions have taken place between PGMOL, the game's lawmakers IFAB and UEFA.
The discussions were "to consider how to act in the best interests of the game in future situations of this type, ensuring that the spirit and intention of the Law is best reflected in decision-making going forwards."
With that in mind, they've revised the wording of the law to ensure a repeat of the incident results in the offside being punished.
The new wording reads:
Where a player in an offside position immediately impacts on an opponent who has deliberately played the ball, the match officials should prioritise challenging an opponent for the ball, and thus the offside offence of 'interfering with an opponent by impacting on the opponent’s ability to play the ball' should be penalised.
They've also clarified that, "However, it is important to remember that where a player in an offside position receives the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball (e.g. a misplaced pass or miskick), including by deliberate handball, the player is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
