Premier League clubs pushing for a June finish to season

The Premier League will hold another call with their clubs tomorrow, with up to nine of them believed to be seeking a June 30th end to the current season.

Clubs are understood to be concerned over the issue of player contracts, which although FIFA are relaxed about from a force majeure perspective, English law could supersede any international rulings and clubs could face the chaotic scenario of not having players available.

Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen, Chelsea pair Willian and Olivier Giroud and Liverpool's Adam Lallana are just some of the players that would be out of contract.

Also, there are a number of commercial contracts with clubs that end on June 30th, with new ones in place for July 1st.

There are 92 games remaining in the current Premier League season, and if they were to be played they would effectively have to be behind closed doors in the interests of public safety.

A 35 day window is tentatively being put forward, which would mean action would resume on June 6th.

The UK Government has not issued new guidelines around sport during their current lockdown which would encompass looking ahead to the month of June.

Yesterday, large-scale public events in Germany were banned until August 31st, with the prospect of Bundesliga 'ghost games' without crowds, intended for May, still up in the air.
