Pogba can be next Manchester United captain - Andy Mitten

Paul Pogba could be the next Manchester United captain if he remains committed to the club according to Andy Mitten, the editor of United We Stand.

Pogba, who first joined the club in 2011 before being sold and later re-signed from Juventus, would be the second French captain in United’s history if selected by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Pogba’s contract runs until the end of the 2021 season, but speaking on Wednesday’s OTB AM Mitten said that a summer of speculation linking the Frenchman to Real Madrid would be inevitable.

Pogba is having his best season to date, having scored 16 goals in all competitions and according to Mitten the only way he would be leaving Manchester this season is if he was to “push the move”.

“They want him to be at the club, he's got a contract to stay at the club. They've absolutely no intention of selling him nor any financial pressure to do so. It would basically take a player to go out on strike which I think would be extremely foolish for him to do.”

Despite Pogba’s strong showings since Mourinho fell, United fans do still have their doubts over Pogba and the 26 year-old’s conduct. Speaking on beIN sports after the Barcelona match, United legend and former captain, Gary Neville, criticised Pogba’s attitude describing him as appearing “disinterested” and performing to his pre-Solskjaer levels during the defeat.

Mitten noted that while Pogba has been much improved under Solskjaer, consistency has been a recurring problem.

"Paul Pogba is a top player but he will have two good games and a dreadful game. Roy Keane was doing it 8 games out of 10 and so were seven of his teammates."

Mitten, however, thinks that Pogba will still be a Manchester United player next season and with the right assurances will thrive. “United need to keep their best players and Paul Pogba is among the best players - he should be the absolute best player.”

“I think he will be reassured the team will be built around him and he will probably become captain which wasn’t going to happen under Jose Mourinho.”
