Gundogan and the players who could kick on next season

Last season, at the end of the Premier League season, we looked at some of the newcomers who had arrived in the division.

Liverpool's Roberto Firmino and Tottenham's Son Heung Min were among new arrivals who had performed reasonably in 2015-16 but who had shown the potential to kick on the next season.

That duo improved drastically this season, having had a full period to acclimatise to a new league. The other players included like Anthony Martial and Mohamed Elneny either stagnated or regressed at Manchester United and Arsenal respectively this season, although the Frenchman is young and has the potential to find his way again.

But from the newcomers at the start of the 2016-17 season (or returnee in the case of Paul Pogba), who can we look out for with the potential to kick on next season in a similar way to Son and Firmino?

Michy Batshuayi

Signed from Marseille for almost €40 million, the 23 year old has had to wait patiently for a chance to show what he can do at Chelsea.

The headline for his season was the winning goal that clinched the title against West Brom which sparked a run of four goals in the final three fixtures of the season for the young Belgian.

Otherwise, it's been a season on the fringes, although the fact that Chelsea have more games to contend with next season with the addition of the Champions League means Batshuayi's game time should increase.

But even if Diego Costa leaves, Chelsea are likely to strengthen up front this summer which poses a challenge for Batshuayi.

But his movement in those final games of the season was impressive and his past goals record at a young age stands him in good stead if he gets a run of games early in the next campaign.

Paul Pogba

It's obvious the France international has far more in the tank than he showed this past season. While he was far from a failure, his performances did not match the eye-watering fee Man United parted with to bring him back to Old Trafford.

At 24, time is very much on his side and although he only scored five league goals in 2016-17, Pogba also hit the woodwork numerous times

But while Pogba has areas of his game to work on, like being more authoritative in the engine room, the challenge for Jose Mourinho is to find a system that unlocks the best from Pogba as Juventus managed to do previously.

What Juve did was have a deep lying playmaker to dictate play in the shape of the peerless Andrea Pirlo and a dynamic box to box midfielder like Arturo Vidal. That takes the responsibility of running the game off Pogba and allows him to drift more within that midfield formula.

His Man United team-mate Henrik Mkhitaryan is a player who did begin to show his ability and with a run of games and less injury issues, could well improve next season.

Ilkay Gundogan

Among the youngsters to shine in Pep Guardiola's first season at Manchester City was January arrival Gabriel Jesus as well as Leroy Sane who improved and became more important as the season progressed.

Germany international Ilkay Gundogan also made an impression in midfield all too briefly but like his final seasons at Borussia Dortmund, injuries badly affected his 2016-17.

It resulted in the central midfielder making just 10 league appearances before a cruciate knee ligament injury ended his season in December.

Prior to the injury, he had managed to net five goals in all competitions and provide two assists.

His reputation in Germany for clubs and country precedes him, but should his return in pre-season go well and he can avoid any injury setbacks by the start of next season, Gundogan could be a real boon for Guardiola as he looks to build on a challenging and underwhelming debut season at City.

Certainly with his passing ability and intelligence, a fully fit Gundogan will be one to watch.

Shkodran Mustafi

Although he had briefly been in the Premier League before with Everton, the Germany international had then gone to Sampdoria in Italy and then Spain's Valencia.

His first season at Arsenal has seen him finish with 26 appearances and some decent performances here and there.

At 25, the World Cup winner has time on his side in terms of maturing defensively and as a partner to Laurent Koscielny heading into next season.

But it was his impact as a potential leader that was noted by team-mate Theo Walcott, who once pointed out, "If you are not doing something right he tells you. He is a German international and that is the way he is."

While that clearly didn't prove enough this season for Arsenal, more of that is needed in a squad often accused of lacking leadership and talkers.

Interestingly after his late summer arrival at Arsenal, the Gunners were unbeaten until mid-December. Then he suffered an injury and missed the first two Arsenal losses during his time at the club against Everton and Man City when Arsenal's season began to flounder.

While he was involved in some of the more shambolic team and defensive performances later in the season, it will be interesting to see if a bit of rhythm and stability at the start of next season could help Mustafi become a linchpin of the back line.
