Peter Hutton and Felix Healy share their memories of Ryan McBride

On Sunday, Derry City captain and defender Ryan McBride passed away and in the hours and days that have followed, tributes have been pouring in from across the football community, both in Ireland and further afield.

The 27 year old has been remembered as a strong defender and gentleman on and off the field, who had grown up a stone's throw away from the Brandywell Stadium where he played with distinction.

On Tuesday night's Off The Ball, former Derry City players and manager, Peter Hutton and Felix Healy, shared their memories of McBride and paid their respects.

Touching on McBride's humility, Healy said: "He was a top player at Derry but there were no airs or graces about him and he just got on with the job. And because he was born in the shadow of the Brandywell, he always wanted to play for his local club and he was actually born in '89, the year that Derry did the treble."

Hutton recalled the moment when he entrusted McBride with their hometown club's captaincy and the clear pride that the player felt.

"He had all the characteristics and attributes you would want in a captain. He was selfless in terms of he was always a team player, a hard-working player, brave and honest. A very quiet lad in the changing room but when he crossed the white line, he was immense," he said.

"When I asked him would he like to become the captain, his smile just absolutely lit up the room and he was beaming from ear to ear and he was very, very proud to be asked. And honoured."
