'It was a performance of champions' | Meyler on Liverpool win

Liverpool played like Premier League champions in their win over Sheffield United at Anfield, according to David Meyler.

The home side were comfortable winners in their 2-0 victory, once again stretching their lead at the top of the table to 13 points.

The former Republic of Ireland international was speaking to Off The Ball and was impressed by Jurgen Klopp’s side.

“It was a performance of champions. Looked comfortable all game. I don’t know what it was with Sheffield United tonight, they were never at the races.

“It’s been a tough week for them. But yeah, it was a comfortable night for Liverpool.

The Reds were dominant from the off, with Mo Salah getting his side on the board with a goal within the first four minutes.

The home side controlled possession and territory for the bulk of the match and Sadio Mane put the game to bed after 64 minutes to put his side 2-0 up.

The league leaders have won 19 of their 20 games in the Premier League so far and the former Hull City player couldn’t see anything short of a catastrophe derailing their title challenge.

“I think the only thing [that could affect them] is if they pick up injuries. If Liverpool were to lose Van Dyke that would be tough on them… As long as players don’t get injured, they look unbeatable.

“I think it is fair to say that [Sheffield were intimidated by the occasion]. When you’re a promoted side… you want to play in these games and just like that, it’s gone.

“I think a few Sheffield players will be disappointed with their performance but they’ll bounce back.

“They’ve had a tough week playing Man City already but they’ve had a great season and they deserve to be where they are,” Meyler said.

Jurgen Klopp’s side take on Everton in the FA Cup this Sunday and while it is another short turnaround, Meyler feels the team will be largely unaffected.

“Even so, the way this game was played, Liverpool could probably win another game tomorrow. I don’t think that game would have really taken that much out of them.

“I think they could go on and play another game in a few days and not really have any problems,” Meyler said.
