World 100m champion Christian Coleman banned from Tokyo Olympics

Christian Coleman will miss next summer's Olympic Games after the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) upheld a 2-year ban against the World 100m champion.

Coleman was provisionally suspended in June after missing three drugs tests in 2019.

He'd disputed the second and third of those whereabouts failures, saying he was Christmas shopping on the 9th December 2019 and was unaware of an attempt to test him until the following day.

There is no suggestion that Coleman has ever taken a performance enhancing substance, but three whereabouts failures bring about a 2-year ban.

The 24-year old won 100m gold at last year's World Championships in Doha, and also helped the United States to gold in the men's 4x100m relay.

Regarding the missed test of April 26 2019, a panel found that Coleman didn't update his whereabouts information as soon as possible after the circumstances changed.

Regarding his day of Christmas shopping, receipts showed he was away from home during the period the testers were waiting at his house, despite a claim he was home in time.

The AIU were pitiless in their report, saying, "Rather than learn from his experience with USADA, the athlete's attitude to his obligations can be fairly described as entirely careless, perhaps even reckless".

Coleman will only be free to compete again on May 13 2022, but he may appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
