Irish taekwondo star Jack Woolley was left bloodied after a night out in Dublin ended with a long stay at the hospital.
Woolley is the first Irish athlete to compete in the Olympics in the Taekwondo event, and was hoping to medal at Tokyo 2020 earlier this month.
He was subsequently knocked out of the competition in the Round of 16 by Argentinian Lucas Guzman, after he said his 'legs turned to jelly'.
After returning to Ireland a few weeks ago from the Olympics, Woolley was enjoying a night out with friends on Friday, which ended in him being punched in the mouth and ending up in hospital.
Posting to his instagram account, the Olympian explained what happened during his night out in Dublin.
"So, basically I was just walking up the road and there was a load of people there walking the other way and I was just punched in the mouth!' Woolley said in a story posted to his Instagram account at 1am.
"I have these temporary stitches in, and I have to have plastic surgery, so I have to wait. So I'm going to have a bit of a nap; I am alright," Woolley added to the story three hours later.
Woolley posted a final time early on Saturday morning stating that he is yet to have been seen to relating to his plastic surgery, but that he is doing alright and would respond to the large number of well-wishes he had received in due course.
It is expected that he will be receiving plastic surgery at some point on Saturday.
