West Indies tour under threat following Covid outbreak in Ireland squad

Tuesday's second one-day international meeting of the West Indies and Ireland has been postponed.

It's after two more members of the Ireland squad tested positive for COVID-19.

The sides were due to meet in Kingston, after Ireland lost the opening match of the series by 24-runs on Saturday.

Simi Singh and Ben White missed that match having tested positive for coronavirus. Five Ireland players are now isolating, according to a joint press release from Cricket Ireland, and Cricket West Indies.

Two more Ireland players are out through injury, leaving Ireland with a severely depleted squad.

The West Indies and Ireland are now in discussions to determine the direction of the remainder of the tour. The tourists were scheduled to play three ODIs and a solitary T20 international on Sunday.

The third ODI is scheduled for Friday, but that is under serious threat - along with the remainder of the tour - due to this latest COVID-19 outbreak.

Joint statement:

Cricket West Indies (CWI) and Cricket Ireland (CI) issued a joint statement after two further positive COVID-19 cases were reported in the Ireland camp following recent testing, and two players being ruled out due to injury, resulting in Ireland having a severely depleted squad.

The second CG Insurance One-Day International scheduled for Sabina Park on Tuesday, January 11 has therefore been postponed.

CWI and CI are in discussions to review the match schedule and are working to explore all possibilities for the series to be completed.

The five members of the Ireland team who have returned positive COVID-19 results remain in isolation under the care and supervision of the medical teams.

Further updates will be provided as soon as possible.
