Vincent Hogan on Dublin: "They have a mental resilience that nobody comes close to"

Vincent Hogan, Mary White and Kieran Shannon joined Nathan Murphy for The Saturday Panel on Off the Ball.

After Dublin's third successive All-Ireland win last weekend, the talk soon turned to where Jim Gavin's side rank in the history of the game.

Hogan singled out the mental toughness of the side as their key attribute, saying: "I think the great achievement of this Dublin team and, I don't know how you coach this and if it's possible to coach it, is the mental strength they have.

"And, they have won four of those finals by a point, one of them in a replay, they're getting home, you could say by the skin of their teeth, but the moment Cillian O'Connor's shot hit the post last Sunday and you look at the reaction as the ball is coming down - it's only the Dublin players that are alive under that post.

"And you could almost see the winning point coming because they have that ability to see out a tight game like that like no other team I've ever seen and that's what is defining this team - their mental strength, their resilience.

"Again, going back to Mary's (White) point, the humility and need to be alive under that post when you need to be alive - that's their greatness.

"And I think...they're looking for the five-in-a-row, the five-in-a-row barrier that will distinguish them from any other male team in GAA history.

"And right now, you're looking at - because of their ability to see out games - I mean people are looking at Kerry with four All-Ireland minors in-a-row, they're looking at this kid Clifford who is one of the most extraordinary talents I've ever seen.

"But I was talking to Tomas O'Sé about this and he said 'If you thought about parachuting Clifford right now into that Dublin team you could see him being exceptional' because there's so many mentally strong characters in that team that Con O'Callaghan could come in this year and have an ordinary enough start and yet there was no great pressure on him because others were picking up the slack.

"If Clifford went into the Kerry team right now - I'm not sure the mental strength is there for a teenager to become the main man which he would have to be they way that Kerry team is evolving.

"So, the key to this Dublin team and to win four finals out of five by a single point is pointing to one thing and one thing only, they have a mental resilience right now that nobody comes close to," he added.
