Tommy Martin on Colm Cooper's testimonial dinner: "It's just that it feels wrong and that affects people"

The furore over Kerry legend Colm Cooper's testimonial dinner has came up for discussion as the amateur status of the GAA was discussed on The Sunday Paper Review.

Tommy Martin and Declan Lynch joined Off the Ball to look back at the week's big events and Speaking to Joe Molloy, Martin said: "I feel very sorry for Colm Cooper. I feel like this has gone, I can't imagine he anticipated or suspected or certainly wouldn't have wanted it to turn out like this.

"And, I'm reminded of Bono [who] was speaking at some European conference or other after the brexit vote and he's saying 'Europe is an idea which needs to become a feeling' so the GAA is more of a feeling as an idea and a bit like the Sky Sports deal or sponsorship deals or different things - it's just that it feels wrong and that affects people and you can make an argument for it and you can make an argument for a lot of these things  - this just sort of feels wrong.

"I just feel really sorry for Cooper. Albeit, look he's an adult and he has put himself in this situation and I just think that this whole thing has become so, it's supposed to be a celebration of him yet it's just under this cloud of 'bringing down the values that the organisation hold dear' - I'd say Gooch at this stage would like to be shot of it," he added.
