'Katie's her own worst enemy' | Kenneth Egan talks Taylor-Persoon and looks to future

Kenneth Egan joined Off The Ball to discuss the Taylor-Persoon fight and sounded a note of caution around Katie Taylor's fight choices.

Egan was nothing but complimentary about Taylor - "a warrior" - but believes that there is some danger in the Bray native's career choices.

"I think Katie is going to be her own worst enemy," Egan said.

"I heard her mention that she wants to fight until she is 40, a number of years back. Is she going to continue to fight until she has no more in the tank and someone with less talent beats her? We'll have to wait and see.

"But she doesn't look like she wants to knock it on the head yet. She has done everything, she has done it all but she still seems to be hungry for more."

As for Taylor's opponent on Friday, Egan believes that Delfine Persoon did little to enhance her reputation on the biggest stage.

"For Delfine to go out and put on a performance like that was very, very poor. She must have missed more shots than she had thrown - it was absolutely horrendous.

"All she has is aggression. She has no plan B or plan C. Everything went out the window.

"But still, she caused an awful lot of havoc in the ring. That uncontrolled aggression caused Katie problems.

"Andy Lee had a scorecard up where he had it 4-4 after the first eight rounds and Katie winning the last two rounds. I had it 4-4 and Katie winning the ninth and Delfine winning the tenth, so I had it as a draw myself."

Persoon's style had the potential for a big upset for Taylor, and Egan believes there are lessons to be learned.

"Katie is brilliant, but [Persoon] ruins any game plan. She didn't allow Katie to box how she would want to box.

"There should be minor adjustments made for that. They should be working on Katie's power again because that is how you stop someone like [Persoon]. If you clip someone with a decent head shot or a body shot, it makes them think twice about attacking."

Egan believes that Taylor's future means she will be enticed to fight again Stateside, having earned an approximate £1m for this fight.

"I think there are big fights [in America], in Madison Square Garden when things kick back into play.

"She is not going to retire while she has all those belts. She had a photo taken when she was almost drowning in them! It looks really good and it is hard to give them away.

"While you have them there you are sitting pretty. She is going to continue to fight, keep defending those belts until she knows herself or some little upstart comes and takes them off her.

"But at the moment, she seems invincible!"
