Roger Federer edges out John Millman in Australian Open classic to reach round four

Roger Federer has survived a major scare to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open.

The six-time former winner and 20-time Grand Slam champion edged a four-hour epic on a fifth set tie-break 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 ,4-6, 7-6 against John Millman.

Millman, who knocked the Swiss out at the US Open in 2018, had led by eight points to four in the first to ten final set tie-breaker.

"It was tough. Thank God it's a super tie-breaker otherwise I would have lost this one," Federer admitted on Eurosport after the match.

"I think John played a great match. It came down to the wire, a bit of luck maybe. I had to stay so focused, take the right decisions. He kept on coming up with the goods.

"I thought, 'OK, I didn't play too bad'. I was getting ready to explain myself in the press conference. What a match. John deserved over half of this one."

Novak Djokovic also progressed after his straight sets win over Yoshihito Nishioka, while Milos Raonic beat sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

There were a couple of big upsets in the women's draw as 24 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams was knocked out by China's Wang Qiang.

Meanwhile 15-year old Coco Gauff stunned defending champion Naomi Osaka sealing her place in round four with a straight sets victory in Melbourne.
