Podoroska stuns Svitolina to become first qualifier to reach French semis

Nadia Podoroska ensured there will be an unseeded player in Saturday's French Open women's singles final.

The Argentine beat 3rd seed Elina Svitolina 6-2, 6-4 in their quarter-final at Roland Garros. Svitolina had been the only remaining seed in that half of the draw.

The win means Podoroska is the first ever qualifier to reach a women's semi-final.

The world no.131 will play either Iga Swiatek or fellow qualifier Martina Trevisan in those semi-finals.

"It’s difficult for me to speak after the match, but thanks everyone for your support. I’m very, very happy!” Podoroska said on court after downing Svitolina.

"I try to play every kind of shot. We did a good job with my coaches during quarantine.

"I’ve been training a lot with all of my team and I think that’s why I’m here today."

Svitolina felt she wasn't fully focused, saying, "I wasn't 100% mentally on it today and that was really disappointing.

“I think it was really tough for me to find focus. I didn't perform as I wish I could and in the end I completely dropped my level. I gave her the opportunity to play really good tennis.”

On the other side of the draw, world no.57 Danielle Collins beat Ons Jabeur 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a 4th round match carried over from Monday.

Collins will play the 4th seed Sofia Kenin in the quarter-finals.

Should Laura Siegemund beat 7th seed Petra Kvitova on Wednesday, it will mean there'll be three first-time Grand Slam semi-finalists, for the second year running at Roland Garros.
