Paulie Malignaggi believes Conor McGregor's actions are those of a man desperate to try and stay relevant.
The boxer made the remarks after the UFC fighter was arrested for his actions at the Barclays center in New York on Thursday night.
Footage emerged last night that appeared to show the UFC fighter breaking the window on a bus.
Fighters had earlier appeared at a promotional event and were waiting to be taken back to their respective hotels when the incident occurred.
Michael Chiesa was left with a cut face after a window on the bus was broken. A police spokesperson described the injury as minor.
The Dubliner turned himself in at the 78th Precinct police station in Brooklyn last night and was taken into custody by NYPD officers.
He is due to appear in court in New York later today charged with three counts of misdemeanour assault and one count of felony criminal mischief.
Malignaggi is a forming sparring partner of McGregor. The boxer had been drafted in ahead of McGregor's fight with Floyd Mayweather last August.
The two-time world champion quit McGregor’s pre-fight camp after photos of their sparring session appeared online, he branded McGregor a ‘piece of shit’ at the time.
Malignaggi spoke to Newstalk Breakfast about the Dubliner’s latest antics which landed him in jail and claimed that McGregor’s sole motivation was to garner attention:
“He didn’t have to start throwing guard rails, you go with your crew to where the buses are going and when they get off at the hotel you meet them there, if you really want to fight that’s what you do.
“If you just want to put on a show and wreak havoc and put everyone else into situation where its difficult you do what Conor McGregor did today, he doesn’t want to do anything except get attention.”
Malignaggi says he would still like to fight McGregor in a boxing match because he feels it would be an easy way to make money:
"If the opportunity presents itself, yeah. It's like free money, its an easy fight. Guys like Conor McGregor in boxing they're like a piñata for boxers, it's free money.
"We did 12 rounds sparring and I wasn't even in shape, we did 12 rounds, you know what 12 rounds is? I probably wouldn't last 12 rounds with Katie Taylor in the shape that I was in when I boxed Conor McGregor.
"I was out of shape, showed up to camp and did 12 rounds with Conor McGregor that goes to show how bad, what level of bad he is at boxing. It's a simple fight at 37 even if I'm 50 it's a simple fight."
