Naomi Osaka says she will take another break from tennis after the defence of her US Open tennis title ended at the third round stage.
The world number three lost in three sets, 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 6-4, to 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez at Flushing Meadows overnight.
Osaka withdrew from the French Open back in May after revealing she has been struggling with her mental health since becoming a Grand Slam champion in 2018.
The 23-year-old also missed Wimbledon before returning to the sport at the Tokyo Olympics.
"I think I’m going to take a break from playing for a while. How do I go around saying this? I feel like for me recently when I win I don’t feel happy.
"I feel more like a relief. And then when I lose, I feel very sad. I don’t think that’s normal. I didn’t really want to cry.
"I don’t think it was her serve because I’ve been able to return pretty well against people that served better. I don’t think it’s the occasion because I’ve been in this situation before.
"I guess we’re all dealing with some stuff, but I know that I’m dealing with some stuff."
