Former IBF and WBA welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi believes the Nevada commission test fighters just to save face.
The “Magic man” also says the State Athletic Commission don’t want to catch Alvarez cheating because of the huge amount of money his fight’s bring to the city of Las Vegas.
“Paulie” joined this evening’s OTB and hit out at the NAC regarding the suspension they issued on the Guadalajara native.
“Here’s the problem and the hypocrisy of this: this guy brings in so much money they don’t actually want to catch this guy cheating again. They are disappointed that they caught him cheating once. This is how you know that all this drug testing is hoopla, all just for show. It’s all just to save face. They really don’t want a guy like this to fail,' said Malignaggi.
The Mexican fighter was issued a minimal suspension after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol, subsequently his schedule May 5th bout with Gennady Golovkin was cancelled.
The multiple-weight World champion blamed contaminated meat for the presence of the PED in his system. The suspension is retroactive to February, clearing the way for the potential of rescheduling a rematch with GGG in September.
New York's Malignaggi also accused the NAC of double standards in relation to their punishment of fighters. He pointed out that MMA fighter Nick Diaz was handed a six-year suspension for using marijauana, while Canelo was handed a lesser ban for a PED and steroid use.
The Showtime boxing commentator also believes Alvarez should be scrutinized by the commission with mandatory and probationary period of testing.
“Nick Diaz was suspended for longer than this for marijuana, a few years ago. He’s a UFC fighter, ok. For marijuana he got a one-year suspension, ok. Canelo got less than that for PED’S and steroids - that’s number one. Number two – There should be a mandatory and probationary period, or at least a fine, along with a six-month suspension. What I mean by a probationary period is: let me give you an example: for the next two years Canelo needs to be strictly, random and regularly drug tested. Consistently for the next two years straight, for the next 24 months straight, and if at any point in those 24 months he fails they should add two or three years to the suspension. “
