Lewis Hamilton suspects he has Long Covid after podium instability

After Lewis Hamilton finished third at the Hungarian Grand Prix, attention turned to his continuing battle to stay race ready with an ongoing health issue.

The British driver appeared unsteady on his feet on the podium in Budapest, and required assistance onto the podium.

He spoke to the Mercedes team doctor, and elaborated on his condition after the race.

"I haven’t spoken to anyone about Long Covid but I think it is lingering there," Hamilton said after the race.

"I remember the effects of when I had it and training has been different since then. The level of fatigue that you get is different and it is a real challenge.

"I am trying to keep training and preparing as best I can. Who knows what it is today? Maybe hydration. I don’t know but it was definitely different."

Hamilton continued to explain that he had been suffering with a similar issue at Silverstone, but that the symptoms today were 'way worse.'

"I was having real dizziness and everything got a bit blurry on the podium,’ Hamilton explained.

"I have been fighting all year with staying healthy and what happened at the end of last year but still it is a battle."

Brands Hatch death

Meanwhile, Hamilton and other racing drivers have sent their condolences to the family of a volunteer steward at Brands Hatch, who died after being struck by an out of control car.

The incident occurred at a British Automobile Racing Club car championship event at the Kent racing track on Saturday afternoon, with Kent police called to the race track.

There were found to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, which has affected the British racing community.

"Devastated to hear of the passing of a marshal at the Brands Hatch Circuit," Hamilton wrote on social media.

"These volunteer marshals are what makes racing possible, they are heroes. My heart is with his family."

Motorsport UK released a statement as to the matter on Saturday.

"The race meeting was immediately suspended and Motorsport UK, together with the event organiser, has begun a full investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

"The thoughts of everyone at Motorsport UK are with the marshal's family, the organisers of the event, and other members of the motorsport community who were present."
