Sofia Kenin won her first Grand Slam title this morning, clinching the Australian Open women's singles title with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Garbine Muguruza.

The American came from a set down to win the title and expressed her delight afterwards.

"I just want to say my dream has officially come true," an emotional Kenin said.

"I cannot even describe this feeling, it's so emotional and I've worked so hard. I'm just so grateful to be standing here, dreams come true so if you have a dream, go for it and it's going to come true.  I just can't believe it's come true."

Kenin beat the teenage sensation Coco Gauff in the fourth round and enjoyed a straight-sets win over top seed Ashleigh Barty in the semi-final.

She reserved particular praise for the crowd in Australia.

"It's such an honour and a privilege to be here and thank you so much. I'm looking forward to coming back here next year.

"I would like to thank the crowd these past two weeks have been the best two weeks so thank you guys so much, I love you all from the bottom of my heart."

The champion also had words of consolation for her opponent Muguruza.

"I want to congratulate Garbine on a great match and a great tournament I'm sure we're going to have many more finals to come in the future so I just want to congratulate you and your team on a great two weeks."

Muguraza offered her congratulations on-court after the match and said the winner played an 'incredible' match.

"Congratulations Sofia,  I think you played an incredible match, an incredible tournament and you deserve the trophy. I think we are going to see you play more finals for sure."

The men's singles final between Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem takes place tomorrow morning.
