Katie Taylor no.2 in Ring's first ever women's pound-for-pound list

Katie Taylor has been listed no.2 in Ring Magazine's inaugural women's pound-for-pound rankings.

It's the first time in the 98-year history of the famous magazine that female boxers have been ranked in a similar manner to their male counterparts.

Topping the list is three-weight world champion, Claressa Shields.

A 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, the American is unbeaten in her 10 professional bouts to date, with two of those wins by knock-out.

Despite being ranked ahead of Taylor, Shields appears unhappy with the view of the top-10 from one of its panelists, Diego Morilla.

He said, "I honestly believe that if Claressa Shields had been fighting out of either one of those two corners [in Persoon v Taylor], we would have seen her ‘0’ disappear."

"Some lady said she believe that If I had to fight from either corner in a tough fight that I’d lose? Lol," Shields tweeted, "She just missing the point that I’m that great to where I don’t have to.

"I’ve had adversity happen to me in the ring. I’ve been knocked down “unlike” Taylor.

"But I got up off my butt to win the fight UNANIMOUSLY!

"And Taylor does not have better defense [sic] than me. I won’t be losing or having a split decision fight no matter who I face."

Taylor defended her lightweight titles on Saturday night by beating Delfine Persoon by unanimous decision.

It followed a contentious bout from June 2019, when Taylor need a majority judges' decision to take Persoon's WBC belt.

Shields' Twitter outburst will again raise talk of a meeting with Taylor, but it's something the American has previously dismissed.

"We are just too far apart," Shields told Sky Sports in June, "That’s a great fantasy fight, but the lowest I can go is 154lbs, that’s a big push. 147lbs is a bigger push, and I don’t even think Katie can get to 147lbs.

"She has always been small, she isn’t that tall, I don’t even know her to have ever been over 155lbs…. so?

"I can’t make 140lbs, I think I can make 147lbs, but you never know till I am motivated and pushed to have to go down there."

Persoon is ranked only behind Taylor in the lightweight division, and 6th overall.

Despite suffering a shock defeat to Jessica McCaskill earlier this month, Cecilia Braekhus is ranked no.3 overall with McCaskill no.4.

Rounding out the top-5 is Katie Taylor's original opponent for this past spring, Amanda Serrano.
