Gary O'Donovan reaches quarter-finals at World Rowing Championships

Gary O'Donovan has earned a place in the quarter finals at the World Rowing Championships.

The Skibbereen rower won the repechage of the lightweight men's single sculls this morning in Linz. O'Donovan finished over three-seconds clear of boats from Brazil, Sweden Belgium and Uruguay.

O'Donovan will return to the water on Wednesday for his quarter-final. The Olympic silver medallist is the sixth Irish boat to qualify for a quarter-final in Austria this week.

The Irish crew of Hugh Sutton (UCC), Ryan Ballantine (Portora/Newcastle), Miles Taylor (Queen’s University) and James McCarthy (Skibbereen) finished fourth of four crews in their heat of the lightweight men's quadruple sculls (LM4x). That heat was won by Italy, with the Irish crew over 8-seconds behind.

Sutton, Ballantine, Taylor and McCarthy will have to navigate tomorrow's repechage if they're to reach the A-final.

The Men's Pair (M2-) of Mark O'Donovan and Shane O'Driscoll (both Skibbereen Rowing Club) must content themselves with a place in Thursday's E-final. They finished third in their repechage, behind Chile (Ignacio Abraham & Cristopher Kalleg Andrade) and Greece (Ioannis Kalandaridis & Athanasios Palaiopanos).

The LM4x crew aside, two more Irish boats are in repechage action tomorrow.

Tara Hanlon (UCC), Eimear Lambe (UCD), Aifric Keogh (UCC) and Emily Hegarty (UCC) go in the first repechage of the Women's Four (W4-).
