Joining Richie on The Sunday Paper Review today were sports writers John Fogarty and Vincent Hogan looking ahead to the Connacht Championship bout between Leitrim and New York GAA this evening.
Whilst the bookies have installed Leitrim as slight odds-on favourites ahead of tonight's fixture, John Fogarty, GAA correspondent for the Irish Examiner, told Richie that he think it's possible New York can pull off an upset.
"New York have a chance, Richie", explained Fogarty.
"Leitrim are always seen as the quarry.
"The closest New York have got to a victory obviously was a couple of years ago, I think it was three years ago.
"Everything seems to be falling into place for New York in the sense that they have Jamie Clarke there. They have Tom Cunniffe, they’ve Neil Collins, [a] fine Roscommon defender.
"There’s a couple of the fashionistas on this team alright with Jamie Clarke, but there’s Luke Kelly, O’Grady there from Wexford.
"I think they should just about do it but don’t be surprised if we’re talking for the next couple of days about New York finally doing something about it."
Discussion then turned to Kerry GAA's previous trip to the USA in recent years - a trip which earned them 1.15 million dollars, of which helped fund Kerry's centre of excellence. Speaking on this, Hogan felt that New York, and not Kerry, should have been the recipients of that money.
“I think there’s a kickback happening in the likes of New York now where the local New York GAA establishment feel that they should be getting this money", said Hogan.
"They should be developing their own game over there rather than the likes of Kerry. I mean Kerry have desisted now, from that.
"I know for example I was doing Gooch’s book [Colm Cooper] around that time and he was telling me how he went over and he was completely astonished by the heavy hitters in New York that were so taken up by Kerry and their identity was Kerry, even though they might have been there for twenty odd years."
