'Dublin will be massive for me' | Rob Cross on the World Grand Prix

The No. 2 ranked darts player in the world, Rob Cross, was speaking to Off The Ball ahead of the Boylesports World Grand Prix in Dublin.

While Cross has had plenty of success in recent years he has consistently underperformed at Citywest and is determined to impress this time out.

"In the last couple of years, I’ve just gone into those games being a bit tight and tightened up and probably not produced my best.

“This year I’ll just come here and enjoy it and see what happens,” Cross said.

The Englishman hasn’t had a perfect year so far but he feels he has performed when it has mattered most and is satisfied with his efforts.

“In a way, I think I’ve produced better on TV. My standard on TV’s been a lot, lot better. If anything my pro tours have suffered and maybe a few Europeans.

“But I’ve probably focused on the TV a little bit more this year and I wanted to do well. I’ve had a lot of finals on TV this year and played well. Overall, I’m happy. I’m happy with 2019,” Cross commented.

The 29-year-old is dead-set on bringing his best to Dublin this week however and will want to avoid his poor performances in previous years.

“I think this week will be massive for me because obviously I’ve never really played well here before.

“I think if I can go out and relax and get over a longer format then I’ll have a good chance to make the next final,” Cross said.

The 2018 World Darts champion understood that to win the tournament he may have to get the rub of the green.

“You’re going to need a bit of an element of luck, I think, in the tournament. It’s so short obviously. Being Dublin, you only need six legs. Six legs to make two sets and you’re done. Or you’ve lost.

“So it’ll be about a good start, just getting away and then pounding the trebles," Cross explained.

The 2019 Boylesports World Grand Prix starts this Sunday at the Citywest Convention Centre in Dublin and Cross will be hoping to impress this time around.
