"I often end up throwing up after races!" - Track star Ciara Mageean

Ciara Mageean spoke to Off The Ball about her bronze medal in the indoor European Championships in Glasgow – telling Joe Molloy that she often vomits after races.

Athletics is certainly a sport where you give your very last ounce of energy, and Ciara explained that it is usually an Irish sports star that bears the brunt.

“Anybody who knows me knows that it is something that happens after I run!

“I give my all on the track – I often end up throwing up after it. It’s not a nice thing, but it just seems to be the way my body reacts.

“I’ll run myself so hard that once I stop and that lactate keeps building, my stomach doesn’t like that!"

The nature of media being what it is, it is usually former Irish track Olympian David Gillick that bears the brunt, as Ciara explained.

“With poor Dave being in TV is always the person that I see first. He’s straight there, he has got the camera and I am usually on the verge of throwing up. He has got a bit of grief in the past for interviewing me while I’m clearly getting paler and paler and I’m about to gag!”

Onto less queasy matters, Ciara explained that she has had little downtime to consider her achievement due to team commitments.

But this is not the end for Portaferry’s track athlete, who is convinced that she can take gold in the near future.

“I do believe that the [women’s 1500m] is one of the hardest races on the circuit.

“Isn’t it great? To be mixing it with the best in the world, and being one of the best in the world. That’s what you compete in sport for!”

You can check out our interview with Ciara's team-mate Mark English, after his bronze medal at the same event.
