Bubba Newby on representing Ireland: I want to get Irish kids fired-up to ski

Nathan Murphy was joined on Off the Ball by three of Ireland's top Winter Sports competitors ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Cormac Comerford, Patrick McMillan and Brendan "Bubba" Newby were the guests on The Saturday Panel ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang games in South Korea.

Asked about how he got involved in the sport, Brendan Newby told Nathan Murphy: "I started competing when I was 13 years old. The half-pipe is a 22-foot ditch which is shaped like a "U" and you go down the walls.

"Imagine a skate ramp made out of snow and you go downhill and you go up the walls and do tricks, flips and spins, forwards, backwards, spinning both directions and you get five or six tricks and whoever does the best overall impression gets the highest score.

"I'm glad to have come back (to Ireland) - I feel more of a connection to it than I did before.

"It's weird in half-pipe, half-pipe has only been an event since 2014 and growing up I was always 'I'm a skier, I'm a half-pipe skier' - that's not going to lead to the Olympics because it's not an event and ever since it became an event, I was pretty fired-up to try it and the reason I switched to skiing for Ireland is because growing up in Park City (Utah), you've got Winter Olympians and Olympians everywhere. You've got role-models to see on the hill and Ireland doesn't really have that.

"And, I can go to the Olympics and I can bring the stoic I see everyday in Park City to Ireland and gets some kids fired up to ski - I think that'd be pretty cool."
