Ayrton Senna: Eight-part series on the life of the legendary driver is coming to Netflix

A new eight-part series on the life and career of Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna is coming to Netflix and it is due for release in 2022.

To many sports fans, Asif Kapadia's wonderful documentary 'Senna' is one of the finest - if not the finest - sports film ever made. Aside from detailing the Brazilian driver's rivalry with Alain Prost, the documentary also gave a magnificent insight into what made Senna such an iconic driver as he constantly attacked gaps, drove without fear, and was simply magnificent in the rain.

However, the new mini-series, which has the approval of Senna’s family, will give a more all-encompassing view of his life as it charts the Brazilian icon’s journey, from his arrival in England for his first season of Formula Ford 1600 all the way through to his tragic death at Imola during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

A statement on the official Ayrton Senna website said that the Netflix series would be an “invitation to explore the personality and family relationships of the three-time Formula 1 champion."

Senna’s sister Viviane added: “It is very special to be able to announce that we will tell the story that only a few people know about him. The Senna family is committed to making this project something totally unique and unprecedented.”

“Senna started his journey in São Paulo and conquered the world, we are honoured to take his inspiring journey to all his fans, wherever they are. Ayrton Senna has a legacy that spans generations and boundaries and Netflix is proud to take this new look at the man behind the driver to subscribers in more than 190 countries,” said Maria Angela de Jesus, director of original international productions at Netflix in Brazil.

David Coulthard remembered Senna's genius in an interview with Off The Ball in April.

The miniseries will be shot in English and Brazilian Portuguese, it's set to launch in 2022.
