Andy Murray to make Grand Slam singles return at Australian Open

Andy Murray will return to Grand Slam tennis action at the Australian Open next year.

The former world number one was knocked out in the first round at the event in January and had to undergo career-saving hip surgery.

Murray has dropped to 289th in the rankings, but tournament organisers say he will be given a protected ranking of 2nd.

"For sure Andy will be here," tournament director Craig Tiley told Australian radio station Triple M this morning.

"I was on the phone to his agent this morning. He is going to be in Australia early.

"He is ready to return. Remember he said goodbye a year ago. It's great in that period he had surgery and has rebounded really well."

Last year a video was played to Murray after his first-round defeat, bidding to wish him an emotional farewell from the game.

"The good thing about when I watched it was I really saw this is a major surgery. Things can go wrong, this is not always very successful," the Scot said this week of the video.

"It was important for me to watch that because when you're younger you think you're going to be fine."

Murray is playing in Shanghai this week ahead of joining the British team for their Davis Cup campaign.
