Tonight, Carl Frampton was due to begin his road to bouncing back from his first professional defeat by taking on Andres Gutierrez in Belfast.

However, events have turned tables in such a way that both fighters have been ruled out of the bout.

First, Frampton weighed in one pound over the limit, effectively meaning that the fight would no longer be a WBC title eliminator for him, although as Kenneth Egan explained on Off The Ball last night, the long term outcome wasn't wholly negative with better fights potentially on the horizon. The fight with Gutierrez was still due to go ahead however.

And it would still be a title eliminator for Gutierrez if he were to win but hours after Frampton was announced to have missed the weight, the Mexican was also ruled out.

Last night, he revealed that he had suffered injuries after slipping in the shower, meaning the fight was definitely off.

Andy Lee joined Off The Ball in studio to discuss a range of matters including his own future, Katie Taylor's next fight and his appearance in Netflix Counterpunch, but he began with his thoughts on the Frampton-Gutierrez situation.

"Initially he wanted Santa Cruz, the trilogy fight - Santa Cruz who he had beaten and in the return Santa Cruz beat him," said Lee of Frampton.

"But it seems Santa Cruz had other plans and couldn't secure the fight, and so Andres Gutierrez was put up as the homecoming fight and they'd wanted Frampton's homecoming to be Windsor Park. But this opponent and this fight wasn't a big enough fight really to go to Windsor Park, so it went to the SSE Arena."

Lee continued that it was clear to see both fighters trained and prepared well in anticipation of the fight.

"I know Kenneth Egan was on [Off The Ball] last night and he was talking about that [the Frampton camp] wanted to miss the weight in order to avoid Gary Russell Jr, who if Frampton had won the fight, would then become Gary Russell Jr's mandatory fight. That makes sense in a lot of ways to avoid Gary Russell Jr. He's a very dangerous fighter, very fast, very slick American southpaw, a mover, a boxer and that wouldn't be a big draw this side of the pond," he said, adding that a fight against Lee Selby, whose profile would be bigger on this side of the Atlantic, would perhaps bring greater potential for pay-per view. He feels that it could now happen as early as October against Selby.

As for Gutierrez's accident in the shower, it left the Mexican fighter with some gashes to his face and visible dental damage.

"Gutierrez shared the photos on his Facebook and you could see that there's a gash underneath his chin, a gash on his nose and broken teeth. He said he'd slipped in the shower," said Lee.

"It can happen and as bizarre as it sounds, it does look like it's a genuine accident."

And in any case, he added that Gutierrez would have really wanted not only the Frampton fight to go ahead but a shot at Russell Jr as a way to build his own profile.

Lee went on to say that the situation is "just sad and bad for all the boxers involved, all the people who bought tickets, spent money on flights and accommodation."
