AIBA and Indian Boxing Federation in row over Championship hosting

AIBA has moved the 2021 Men’s World Boxing Championships from New Delhi to Belgrade.

It’s after the Indian city failed to pay a host fee stipulated in the Host City Agreement.

AIBA say New Delhi must now pay a $500,000 (€463,000) cancellation fee.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) say the decision is one "taken in haste".

Interim president of AIBA Mohammad Moustahsane said of the move, "I'm sure all the nation would be proud to host the Championships in Belgrade. Serbia has everything to organize a great event for athletes, coaches, officials, and, of course, for our boxing fans.

"It’s a big step toward our new competition system and also the financial stability of our organisation, which is going to be less and less dependent on the Olympic money.

"Because of rescheduling of the Olympic 2020, AIBA Executive Committee will discuss with the host country possible dates to adjust.

"We believe that we will keep planned timeframe and conduct World Championships in 2021 after the Games if the pandemic situation is under control.

"As soon as it is fixed, this will help our boxers to plan preparation for next year properly."

A BFI statement claims, "AIBA had terminated the Host Agreement Contract on its own when they invited fresh bids on the same day as the instalment for the host was to be paid by BFI on December 1 2019.

"While the payment of the first instalment of host fee was not made as the bid documents were made null and void with the fresh hosting bid initiation.

"Under such circumstances, BFI is in no obligation to pay any cancellation or penalty fees to AIBA.

"BFI President Mr Ajay Singh had spoken with AIBA Interim President Mohammad Mustahsane [sic] and both parties are working towards an amicable solution".

India hopes to host the World Championships in 2023.
